English

English had been a part of the curriculum since the inception of the college. The mission of the department is to enhance the literary and communication competencies of the students to meet the changes and challenges in today’s competitive world.

Over the years there have been marked changes in teaching methodology and syllabus however the department has been trying its best to meet with the demands of the students. The department of English offers the following courses as per HPU and SPU

  1. DSE Course: - This is an intensive discipline specific course for three years graduation program offered to students.

  2. Compulsory core course: - this is a mandatory course for all students of BA and B.Com in 1st year and 2nd year.

  3. AECC Course: This is a skill based course (Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course for B.Sc /B.A./B.Com.) 1st year students.


 

At present the department has seven dedicated and diligent faculty members who have been managing with the class strength of 150 to 350 and more students.

Workshop on Communication Skills in English

The English Department of Vallabh Government College Mandi, conducted a one-dayworkshop for the students of English language and literature on 8.9.22 in roomnumber 208 on the topic of Communication Skills in English. In this workshopthe students of outgoing class BA 3rd year were involved along with thestudents of history and political science. The instructor of the workshop wasMr. Bhupesh Kumar who was TESOL/TEFL trainer. He started the workshop withriddles and some interesting questions which made students curious abouteffective communication in English. He emphasized that students find itdifficult to communicate in English because they try not to tell but to impressothers and when such inhibitions are shed, then only one is able to learn how tocommunicate in this language. Students also learnt about some other tips toimprove communication in English. In this workshop Dr. O P Thakur(AsstProfessor, Dept of Pol. Science), Dr Bandana Devi and Ms. Jyotsna(Dept ofEnglish) and around 100 Students were present.

Poetry Recitation Competition on the Launching of English Literary Club

English Literary Club was launched by the English department of Vallabh Government College, Mandi on 10 October 2024.  Faculty members of English department and  students of MA English became the members of this club. Poetry Recitation Competition was organized as the first  activity of the club under the able guidance of Dr. Chetan Singh Rana and and Professor Shikha Kapur.  Professor Shikha Kapur designed  the banner of the club.  Professor Archana conducted the stage on this auspicious occasion. She started  the programme with the invocation of Goddess Sarasvati to seek her blessings so that the club could attain summit of success. She informed that the club aims to provide a platform for the students to explore, engage, and express themselves through literature, fostering critical thinking, creativity and effective communication. Eight students participated in this competition. Professor Tanzin Chhomo made the arrangements for the competition. Professor Vrinda   Shandil and professor Gunjan Hazri were the judges of the competition. Professor Hazri guided the students through her enlightening speech after the competition was over. Professor Jyotsana Bansal and professor Asha Thakur made this programme successful through their constructive suggestions. Ms. Dhriti Sharma (MA1st Semester) secured the first position, Ms. Anjali ( MA3rd Semester) secured the second position, Mr. Rahul kumar (MA 1st Semester) secured the third position in this competition. This programme ended on positive note to involve more activities in future.
